Indifference, procrastination and an interesting thought

by Aaron on Tuesday, December 11, 2007

So everyone’s been telling me to blog more often. How’s twice in one week? :p

Indifference
I just finished reading Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, which really is as good as everyone says it is and I most definitely agree that it should be on every entrepreneur’s must-read list.

One of the principles that Rand espouses is indifference. This is a general indifference towards people who don’t understand ideas such as human greatness, setting goals and taking responsibility. It’s application is a bit more complex. The way that I understand it (and apply it), is that if anyone tries to make moral judgements that clash with your own internal moral compass, rather than fighting them, you just choose to be indifferent to them completely. You continue on the journey you have set for yourself without concern to the other person’s objections. This is not to say to be inhuman, but that your purpose in life should come before that of anyone and potentially anything else.

So I’m now on Day 2 of my positivity challenge, and the concept of indifference has helped tremendously. Rather than whinge and complain about all the little things that I really don’t like here, I’m just indifferent to them. Say someone pushes into a queue, or does something similar, I used to get annoyed. I used to call them on it. Now I just don’t care. I don’t allow their sense of thought, their sense of what is right and wrong to come into it. I just don’t care.

Procrastination
Completely unrelated, but I had a quick idea of how to overcome procrastination. It’s so simple, that I guarantee you’ll be blown away.

Ready….

JUST DO IT.

I didn’t invent the idea, Nike did ;)

Seriously. This is critical especially with big tasks. Like I had 3 hours of market research to do today. 3 hours of trawling through google and websites and then jotting down information. Not fun, not something I really wanted to do on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. But I did it anyway. Just start doing it, and get it done.

Interesting Thought
Something I heard off a podcast today, that your income is actually the average of the 10 people closest to you. I haven’t sat down and worked this out, but I’m guessing it’s probably true. It also got me thinking: what if this is true of other things too? What if your emotional state is the average of the 10 people closest to you? What if your health is the average of the 10 people closest to you?

This would explain a lot. Like why successful people tend to stick together, and the not-so-successful do the same. More on this later.

I had a problem with procrastination today too and found out the best way for me to overcome it (at least for today) is to take a time-out and figure out how you can break up the task into 10-minute chunks.

Reminds me of a saying: How do you eat an elephant? 1 bite at a time.

Hey hey !

Its a landmark achievement !
Aaron blogging on his own site more than twice in one week !

I agree with your idea of indifference, it has sort of been the way I’ve been doing things since the mid of the year. It also focuses your mind on the more important things in life.

Might try to develop that into the positivity idea you talked about earlier and be that person who just radiates positivity and indifference and thereby remain focussed and motivated.
