So yesterday amidst the dreary weather and wind and rain, I found myself talking to some friends about… life, the universe and everything. Well, not really. We mostly just talked about life, and how you go about living your life.
A lot of the conversation was nested and complex and I was probably dropping in and out of trance for a lot of it, but one thing really stood out for me. At one point P (who is an absolute badass – in a good way) asked “So what’s your motivation for doing X?”
The answer my brain spat out really surprised me. But it made sense. And after thinking about it a little more, it made even more sense. And after realising the implications, I looked back over the last year or so of my life and it was like everything just tied together – what I had done, what I was doing, where I was going… it was all driven towards this one single purpose and mission. It also struck me that a lot of the “inner game” thinking (to borrow a term from Tim Gallwey) I had been doing over the past few months bordered on self-delusional. I had been trying to create motivators and purposes that were secondary to that one single purpose that became ever-so-clear to me yesterday.
I woke up this morning feeling balanced, on point and well… just better.
Want to give it a try? Pick an area of your life that you spend a lot of time on. And ask: “What’s my motivation for doing X?” or “Why am I doing X?”
The answer may surprise you.

X can be anything – work, business, dancing, martial arts, going out…
